Bed, Bath, and Beyond

BED

A lot of people were going on an overnight weekend trip to Bath and Stonehenge that left on Saturday at 7:30am, so no one really wanted to do anything on Friday night except sleep.

BATH

I wasn't on the trip, but I decided to take a train and meet them in Bath.

Now, every buildng in the city of Bath must be made out of the same kind of stone. I don't remember why that is other than it looks pretty, but the color doesn't old.

We had a quick lunch at a nearby pub called O'Neill's, then we all bought fudge. It wasn't the best fudge in the world, but it was there and it was cheap.

We decided after the fudging that we'd take a look inside Bath Abbey.

Unlike in Westminster Abbey, we were allowed to take pictures in here.

The sun just started to peek through the clouds when we went in, so everything was very well-lit and shiny.

Believe it or not, we actually found an American senator from Pensylvania buried in the abbey. So, if you ever have dreams of being buried in a historical British abbey, become a senator and don't ask for a spot in Westminster.

The folks on the day trip needed to check into their rooms for the weekend, so we couldn't explore too much of Bath right off the bat.

As we walked to where they were staying, we passed by the beautiful Pulteney Bridge which crosses the River Avon. Yes...it's that River Avon. Apparently, it's a long river. We at least know that it hits Stratford-upon-Avon and Bradford-upon-Avon.

The folks on the trip were going to stay at a local YMCA. Some of the people on the trip were unfortunate enough to be in a room with 4 other people with only one key between them. How the hell the people running this trip thought that was a good idea, I'll never know.

It was getting dark and I was going to need to head home soon, but we all had to make one mandatory stop.

Now, the city of Bath is called Bath because it was the location of a popular Roman bath-house. The way Roman baths worked were there were essentially four different places you coul go in the facility: the cool bath, the warm bath, the hot bath, and the steam bath.

We discovered a little spa that was built right next to the actual Roman baths that was based on the Roman structure. The roof had a warm pool, the basement had a moderately-heated pool and a hot bath (which was by treatment appointment only), and there was a four-scent sauna steam room on the 2nd floor. They offered time slots where you could freely go in between the 2 pools and the steam room, as well as massages or other popular spa treatments.
We spent two and a half hours there. We were all very happy.

BEYOND
.
It took a while to get home via the train to Paddington Station. When I got home around 10pm, a few friends of mine scheduled a monthly-or-so game that I'm a part of at one of their apartments in Manhattan. I Skyped in from across the ocean and we had a great time for about 5 hours. The game started around 7:00pm EST, so it wasn't so taxing for them to end at midnight.
.
I, however, being 5 hours ahead, started at midnight. It was starting to get painful around 4am, but I caught a second wind right around the time I wanted to go to bed. There was a point where more than half of us weren't directly involved in the game for almost an hour and I nearly passed out. This was the most exhausted I've been since I've arrived here and needed to adjust to the time zone.
.
We'll probably be doing it again in a few weeks.
.
Speaking of games, Nathaniel let me in on a little game that a few of the Adler Studio kids play every now and again that I think I should share. It's a great game for parties or long trips. It doesn't have a name, but it's almost like "The 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon". Here's how to play:
.
1) The first person names of a movie.
.
2) The next person names an actor who was in that movie.
.
3) The next person names another movie that actor has been in.
.
4) The next person names another actor who was in the second movie named.
.
5) This formula repeats until someone cannot come up with a linking movie/actor.
.
6) If you cannot come up with an answer, you are out and the next person starts the cycle anew.
.
7) If you are stumped, you can challenge the last person to come up with an answer.
.
7a) If you challenge a movie title, the challenged must name an actor in that movie that was not the actor named in the previous turn. (e.g. - Person A says "Bruce Willis", Person B says "Die Hard", Person C challenges, Person B can say "Alan Rickman", but not "Bruce Willis")
.
7b) If you challenge an actor, the challenged must name a movie that actor has been in that was not the movie named in the previous turn. (e.g. - Person A says "The Green Mile", Person B says "Michael Clark Duncan", Person C challenges, Person B can say "Daredevil", but not "The Green Mile")
.
7c) If the challenge is successful and the challenged cannot give an answer, then the challenged person is out. If the challenged can produce an answer, the challenger is out.
.
8) Last one alive wins.
.
.
On a related note, I would like to thank Tawny Kitaen and Tom Hanks for being in the movie "Bachelor Party" together.
